Chapter Twelve
When we all arrive in Safe Haven, we drop down only a block away from the orphanage where Peter grew up. I can tell he wants to stop by and say hello to some of his old friends, and since gargoyles run the orphanage I figure that it would be a good place to go to get directions to the Ember clan. We all walk down the sidewalk, passing by various monsters. Most everyone in Safe Haven are night creatures like gargoyles. I imagine the city is incredibly quiet during the day. Peter and I, being hybrids, prefer to do our sleeping at night, so we are all a little tired after the eveningâs journey now that the sun has set and our bodies are telling us itâs time to sleep.
We go through the front entrance of the orphanage, and Peter and Delila dip out quickly to find their way to the playground where the cluster of orphaned children are playing. This leaves me with Snowball the elf and Evergreen to look for one of orphanage workers to help us. âSo, how do you two know each other?â Evergreen asks, and honestly, I had almost forgotten Evergreen was not in on the little transformation trick.
âUm,â Snowball mutters under her breath.
âDistant cousins,â I say, deciding that we should probably just stick to the one backstory instead of telling everyone something different.
It does not take long before I spot Headmistress Stone, the large, elderly purple gargoyle with the slight snout walking towards us from down the hall. She smiles upon seeing me and picks up her pace ever so slightly. âMs. Maycomber,â she calls. âIt has been a while.â
I stick out my hand as she approaches, and she takes it and shakes it with a bit of ferocity. I forget how strong gargoyles are. Most of them are not puny like Peter. âYes, it has. These are my friends Evergreen Sumac and Raven.â
âSumacâ¦â the woman says under her breath, and Evergreen stiffens slightly. âAs in Staghorn Sumac?â
âThat would unfortunately be my grandfather,â Evergreen admits. âI do hope you do not judge me for the name.â
Headmistress Stone frowns, but she nods approvingly. âThe Anti-Masons judged an entire race of beings for the actions of a few, so they say. We are better than that, Ms. Sumac. Your name means little to me.â
âThank you,â she says.
Headmistress Stone turns her head to me. âWhat brings you here, Ms. Maycomber? Is Peter here?â
âHe ran off to find some of his old friends from here â I do hope that is okay?â I ask.
âOf course,â she says. âPeter is family to the orphanage.â
âWe came to Safe Haven looking for the Ember Clan,â I say.
The woman looks confused. âAnd why are you looking for that clan?â
âAccording to my grandmother, that is the clan my family comes from,â I say.
Headmistress Stone nods. âAh, Iâm glad you have confirmed that. I have often suspected, mostly from the orange tint of the boy, that he must be of the Ember Clan.
